What sort of work can we help you with?

That’s a very good question, as the work I can do for you is quite varied. Here some examples (though this is by no means a comprehensive list):

Helping with newsletters: generating ideas for themes, topics and articles; researching and writing the articles; liaising with other suppliers, e.g. email newsletter service for e-newsletters, or graphic designers for printed newsletters; creating a production schedule so that everyone knows what needs to be done and by when.

Sourcing stock photographs for marketing materials: an important but time-consuming job that many business owners just don’t have the time for.

Organising print and web projects: many clients don’t have the time or inclination to source other goods suppliers, and we have a close network of trusted suppliers. So I can tell them about your project; obtain estimates from them; and then point you in the right direction. I can continue working with the supplier if you wish, to ensure that the project is implemented as smoothly as possible – and on time and to budget.

Copywriting: creating compelling words that sell. For newsletters, articles, emails and websites.

Feedback on ideas: many clients use me as someone to bounce ideas off. Whether it’s something new you’ve thought of; something you’re tweaking; or perhaps you’ve been offered an opportunity that needs evaluating. I can be your honest-but-kind sounding board!

Support, knowledge, information and guidance: I’m here to give you the knowledge you need to feel confident in your marketing. An important part of that is to make it clear what your priorities are, and to keep you focused on those.

Social media advice: a number of my clients are interested in using social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn for business purposes… but how to go about it? I can talk you through it (in plain English) and come up with a plan for you – if I think it’s the right thing for you to be doing.

Keeping you on track: I’ll keep track of all your projects. They’re diarised in our Task system to make sure that nothing falls between the cracks. That means that I’ll proactively remind you of things as they’re due, as well as emailing you updates every so often of where things are at. The goal is to keep the momentum going, get things done, and get results!

Small business marketing is a bit different to marketing a large corporation. The difference? Budgets! A small business generally has a smaller budget which needs to streeeeeetch as far as possible.

Therefore every dollar you spend needs to be a dollar well invested. And that’s also what makes my job fun for me – seeing my clients do well by making smart, informed investments in their small business marketing.

Again, this might seem obvious, but it’s important too. The Leaky Bathtub’s small business marketing tactics work really really well for quality products and services. If you’re not interested in offering a hiqh quality product or service, then I’m not the right supplier for you.

I’m here to help you, and share my knowledge with you. I’ve been doing what I’m doing for a darn long time now, and the marketing tactics really do work. They work for me, and they work for my clients.

The best results come from the business owners who take everything on board and follow my advice. So how can we work together?

There are 2 main options:

  • Option 1: Help with One-Off Projects
  • Option 2: Regular marketing help with a Marketing Retainer

Information on both options is below…

Option 1: Help with One-Off Projects

If you want help with a specific project, that’s absolutely fine… provided I have the capacity to take on the work. (The clients who invest in a regular monthly Marketing Retainer get the first priority; after all, they’ve made a commitment to me, so it’s only fair that I make a commitment to them.)

So if you’d like one-off help, just get in touch, and I’d let you know how soon it would be before I can help you.

(Note that I never take on rush jobs or urgent work. Not only do I not have the capacity to take it on, but this kind of work is not enjoyable. Besides, if you have a marketing plan in place, there’s simply no need for ‘marketing emergencies’!)

I’d discuss your projects with you on the phone or via email, and then provide an estimate for you to approve before any work is commenced. I’d also make sure at this point that I am indeed the right supplier for your requirements.

(If you’d prefer to brief me face-to-face, that’s fine. The briefing meeting, including the travel time, would be invoiced to you at our standard hourly rate: details are below.)

If there are any events which would exceed the estimate given, I would let you know as soon as is practicable, as I realise that  accurate budgeting is important for your business. (I’m a firm believer that there should never be any nasty surprises at invoice time!)

The rate for working on one-off projects is $150 an hour, and there is a 2 hour minimum charge (i.e. $300 + GST).

All prices are in New Zealand Dollars and subject to GST. You may either be invoiced in advance with work commencing once cleared funds are received. This is especially likely if you’re a new client… I’d prefer to help you with your marketing than chase you for money!

Otherwise you’ll be invoiced in arrears; payment terms are strictly 7 days; please see our Terms & Conditions for more information. The preferred payment method is direct credit to FX Marketing’s bank account – full details will be on your invoice.

What do you consider as billable time?

In short, all the time I spend devoted to you is billable. That includes the marketing and copywriting work itself, plus any time spent on phone calls and emails, travel time, meeting time, and so on.

Option 2: Regular marketing help is yours with a Marketing Retainer

If you’re looking for regular, monthly marketing help, then you’ll enjoy a lower hourly rate as well as a host of other benefits with a Marketing Retainer…

What is a Marketing Retainer?

With a Marketing Retainer, you’d invest a fixed amount each month for me to work with you: the options are either 5 or 10 hours a month. (If you’d like more time, that’s fine, just contact me to discuss your needs.)

But unlike other retainers where the suppliers sits and waits for you to tell them to do stuff, there’s a loose structure in place that sees us working as a team.

Important: you must have had an Initial Consultation before commencing a Marketing Retainer. This immediately gives us a plan to work to, and I’ll help you implement it. (Or if you’ve invested in a marketing plan, that’s even better.) If too much time has lapsed between your Initial Consultation and Marketing Retainer, we’ll need to meet again to discuss your priority marketing projects.

How we’ll work together on your marketing

Together we’ll pick out some priority projects, work on them, and when they’re complete (or nearly complete), we’ll work on the next priority level projects.

Part of the process involves you providing me with results, measurement and feedback, so that we can learn together and tweak anything that needs tweaking. This is a continual process:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I can’t stress the importance of the measurement and feedback enough: the more you tell me, and the closer I work with you, the better the results.

What are the benefits of a Marketing Retainer, rather than working on a one-off basis?

  • Cost savings: by using my services on a regular, monthly basis you’ll pay a lower hourly rate.
  • More strategic: the whole process looks at your big picture goals, allowing me to guide you and work with you in a more strategic manner.
  • Better results: because we’ll be working more closely together, I’ll be more aware of your business and your goals. And that’ll bring you the best possible results.

Is it essential to have a Strategic Marketing Plan?

It’s definitely important to have an agreed list of priorities to work from. And that’s exactly what the Strategic Marketing Plan does.

That said, in honesty not every business needs a Strategic Marketing Plan: I’ll only write one if we think you’ll get value out of it, or if you insist on it.

So if there’s a Strategic Marketing Plan to work from, then great! If not, we’ll start off by agreeing a set of priority projects upfront and in writing (based on your Initial Consultation), as that’ll form the basis of my work for you.

How often will we meet?

The simple answer is: as often as it’s needed!

Obviously we’ll need to meet at the outset to agree the immediate set of priorities. And in the first few months, we’ll probably meet every month or two – the rest of the time we’ll communicate primarily by email (and sometimes by phone).

After that, as things settle down, we’ll probably meet 3 or 4 times a year for a review. In that review, we’ll evaluate how things are going; shareresults and feedback; and agree the next set of priorities.

In between times, we’ll communicate regularly by email (and sometimes by phone). I’m not keen on having more meetings than is necessary: this is a throw-back from my time in the corporate world, where we had pre-meeting meetings, the meeting itself, followed by a post-meeting review meeting… and no, sadly, I’m not joking!

It’s about having the right amount of meetings to build up a good relationship, and keep the momentum on your marketing going.

If you ever feel that you’d like a meeting, and I haven’t already suggested it, please do let me know at any time. 🙂  I don’t know what’s happening at your end unless you tell me!

Is a Marketing Retainer suitable for start-up businesses?

Yes! I’ve worked with numerous start-up businesses who want to focus on doing things right rather than bumbling around doing things the long and hard way.

In many cases we’ll work together for 3-6 months, after which time the business owner has all the tools, information and knowledge to take over the marketing.

(Or if you’d like me to work with you on an ongoing basis, that’s fine too!)

I’m not very organised and need a lot of chasing. Can you do that?

Part of my role is to manage your marketing projects for you, and keep things running on track as much as is possible from my end. As part of that I will follow up on things and remind you of what needs doing.

However, I don’t nag or chase excessively. At the end of the day, it’s your business, and we’re all adults with the ability to manage our time as we wish. So if you’re looking to be micro-managed, I’m not the right supplier for you.

(It’s a pretty weird experience chasing people who don’t reply to you – it’s much more rewarding to work with clients who are keen, motivated, committed and enthusiastic about their business!)

How many Marketing Retainers do you take on at a time?

I currently offer a maximum of 5 to 7 Marketing Retainers at any time (depending on how many hours each retainer is for). That’s so that I can give each and every client the care and attention they deserve.

How long does the Marketing Retainer last for?

That’s completely up to you. At the outset I ask for a commitment of a minimum of 3 months; after that, it’s on a rolling monthly basis.

Some clients find the 3 months sufficient to get themselves up-and-running, as throughout the time I’ll be sharing plenty of information and knowledge with you so you have the skills to do much of your own marketing, should you wish to do so.

Other clients work with me every single month, as they just want to have the hassle of marketing completely taken off their shoulders. Or perhaps they have a regular monthly project (e.g. a newsletter) that they want me to take care of.

Can you switch between the Retainer options?

Yes, absolutely: I’d just need a month’s notice (i.e. 30 days), just so I can plan our time and cash flow.

What if you don’t use up all the time one month? Or need extra time?

It’s quite normal for some months to be up and some months to be down. (Usually, when I start working with a new client, we tend to go over time, as there’s so much initial work to do!)

To allow for this, I’ll log all the time used on your work, in 15 minute increments. At the end of the month (invoice time) I’ll let you know how things are tracking. And if you’d like an update at any other time, just ask.

If you know that you’re going to need more time, you can purchase this in 1 hour increments, at the same hourly rate as your Marketing Retainer.

What do you consider as billable time?

In short, all the time I spend devoted to you is billable. That includes the marketing and copywriting work itself, plus any time spent on phone calls and emails, travel time, meeting time, and so on.

Are there any other costs involved?

You would be charged for extra items, such as courier fees, postage fees, CDs, car parking, etc. related to your project.

However, I don’t usually charge for toll calls (unless your project involves a lot of these), and there’s no mileage fee.

Of course, to market your business you’ll also need to spend money on graphic design, printing, web development, etc. etc… but I’ll never every commit to spending anything in your name unless we have your express written permission and agreement.
